Get to know the new Chiefs kicker

This move just makes sense for the Chiefs.

It was a wild week for Cairo Santos as he was placed on IR and released the same week but it shows you in this league it is about being healthy and able to play.  The move made complete sense for the Chiefs as far as waiving Cairo and moving forward with Harrison Butker especially since he was someone they were high on in the draft and Santos is set to be a free agent.  Santos already makes 1.79 million and could command 3 million next season. Harrison Butker was actually picked up the same day the Chiefs placed Santos on the IR.  They grabbed Butker from the Panthers practice squad and immediately put him on the roster to take the place of Santos.  Santos could have been one of the 2 guys that the Chiefs took of the IR once he spent 8 weeks on it. Harrison was drafted in the 7th round pick 233 by the Panthers this past draft.

Ian Rapaport even seemed surprised by this as did many but again it makes sense. FYI you can hear Ian Rappaport every monday at 12:15 with The Day Shift.

One thing is for sure is that this will be a ton of pressure on the rookie kicker playing on a 3-0 team on Monday Night Football at Arrowead.  Going from a teams practice squad to a team with Super Bowl aspirations active roster is a big move for Harrison. Bye the way his twitter handle is @buttkicker87 What a great twitter handle.

Here is what Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub said about his new kicker this past week:

“He’s a good kid. He’s a good kicker. He was our number one guy coming out this year as a rookie, we had him ranked number one. So if we were going to draft a guy he was going to be the guy we would probably target. So we felt good about him coming out, we just weren’t looking for a kicker at that time. It’s funny how things work and now all of a sudden we’ve got him. We’re happy with him, he’s a good kid. He’s worked well with Dustin (Colquitt) so far and James (Winchester). The operation seems to be going flawless right now. I mean Dustin, he’s a great pro, and he’s probably one of the best holders in the league. Harrison (Butker) is pretty fortunate to have him as a guy.”

“I mean it’s a nerve wracking deal. You’ve got a rookie and you don’t know how he’s going to react. Right now we like his temperament. He seems to be real confident, doesn’t seem like it’s too big for him. Sooner or later he’s going to have to have his first game and it’s going to be Monday Night Football, so it’s a pretty good situation for him.”

Let's hope he can continue to make clutch kicks like this. I believe he can:

One thing is for sure this town is jacked from some Monday Night football against the Washington Redskins.
