GAME SCORE

Royals:

Padres:

Royals were at home today to take on the Padres with Jorge Lopez back on the mound.

Lopez was sharp. He had four nearly perfect innings and as a result came in for the 5th. He let up a HR in the inning but his outing was very impressive. Enough so that I think he has already shown enough to be in the rotation.

He felt really good after the game about how he pitched

Here is what Ned said about the pitching performances afte the 11-6 loss.

The Royals also began the cut process as well today and there weren’t really any surprises. These are the early one that allow the starters a chance to continue to stretch out for the regular season.

They optioned Arnaldo Hernandez, Ben Lively, and Jake Newberry to AAA Omaha and assigned both Jake Kalish and Andres Machado to minor league camp.

The Royals are still at 59 players here in camp and will likely make more cuts coming up early in the week. There is another split squad game tomorrow so they will still need all hands on deck to make sure they have enough players to take care of the action.

I did try to get Ned to bend on the Opening Day starter but he wouldn’t budge. Sounds like it could happen on the 12th as far as an announcement goes and if you made me guess I will still guess it will be Brad Keller.

I know I also wrote about Junis yesterday but some more promising data from his first start. Last year his swing and miss numbers took a dip and he admitted to the classic “league adjusting back” occurrence but is ready to adjust back.

On a side note I did see Danny Duffy toss for a few minutes today. He was still on flat ground and not off the mound but he is continuing to throw which is a good sign. They haven’t ruled him out to start with the big league club once the season starts but they are working him back slowly.

I understand the caution. It is the long game with Duffy and as I have pointed out this week in a different article they can wait on Duffy until April 12th if they wanted to. That would be the first time they would need a 5th starter.
