Cody's Corner: What to do with Lovelady and Lopez

The Royals took on the Indians today and it was the offense that had a big day. The starters scored 11 runs in 5 innings with Gallagher and Gordon with three hits a piece. Not to mention Hamilton, Mondesi, O’Hearn, Owings, and Arteaga also reaching base.

They added another on a monster HR from Soler who has four already this spring. He is hitting a HR every 9.25 at bats this spring. So far you can't complain about the offense. Mondesi has an OBP over .400 and Alex Gordon is hitting .400. Ned has been impressed

Early signs there have been good.

Keller was rocky and admitted as much. He went four innings allowing three runs and four hits. He said his command struggled

Kennedy also pitched today and went three innings. It was tough for him today as well. He allowed seven hits and allowed three runs.

This is a tease for a reason but I did get a chance to talk to Dayton Moore for a long time today as well and we talked about Keller and how the team will approach hitting as an organization. You can hear it all on the Hot Stove Show but he was really impressed by how quickly Keller has come along.

The Royals also had organizational awards today and named Nicky Lopez their hitter of the year and Lovelady their pitcher of the year. There were a lot of other awards (obviously) but I mention those two because they have the best shot to be players at the big leagues this year.

Lopez is gonna take time in the year to get there so lets wait on him but this is the second year in a row Lovelady has gotten the honor. He was happy with the results but is ready to be in the big leagues

They shouldn’t wait any longer on him in my opinion but a crowded bullpen will make it a tough call. He is ready to be in the majors

Lopez would look good this year too but he is blocked until the Royals have some more positions open. I am not just talking about second base. That is where Nicky will play but any spot that opens up means Whit can move around and Nicky has a role. I also would like to see Lopez to start a year in AAA and see how it handles it. I ran out of time to grab Nicky today but I promise to walk to him tomorrow and stick it in my blog for the day.

I think Lopez at second and Whit in RF would be a fun option and I think Lopez can handle this level too but I think the Royals will wait.

I expect them to play it a little slower with him. They also don’t have to add him to the 40 man until the fall which gives them some flexibility.
