Cody’s Corner

Royals: 6

Brewers: 2

The Royals were in action against the Brewers today in split squad action. Homer Bailey was on the bump again after some early spring struggles. He was his best today going four scoreless innings and pitched well to the weather with the wind blowing in. He has an opt out choice in nine days but says that is an agent thing and not something he worries about.

Chris Owings hit his 8th double to go with a pair of HRs and slugging over .750. Last yeat was a struggle for him but if he can carry any of this momentum into the regualr season then the Royals lineup gets much deeper.

You know what Whit is and Mondesi and Soler have star potential. Soler is slugging over .700 as well as he has 4 doubles and 4 HRs in his forst 40 at bats this spring.

Also Martin Maldonado got some game action today against the minor leaguers although there was a bit of a scare when he was hit by a pitch in his second at bat. He is scheduled to catch for the Royals on Tuesday but was noticeably limping when he came off the field.

Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com said the Royals could be a little bit cautious on it.

He did look good at the plate today and hard a sharp single off of Bryan Brickhouse who was bringing in it at 100 mph today and struck out the only other batter he faced.

He also got some work in behind the plate and while I will admit that Gore was a plant to get Maldonado some throwing practice it is still impressive to throw out Gore even if Gore didn’t quite take the lead he normally would.

Gore knows he still has it…

Although on the other side Maldonado wanted to join in on the fun.

Ned did day that Maldonado should be ready for the regular season but said it might be more of a split time early to make sure he is up and ready to go. Having Gallagher ready as the backup means they can take it slow with Martin to make sure there are no issues before he starts getting a bulk of the time.

Also of note is that is still appears that Danny Duffy will remain in Arizona for extended spring training to start the year. The Royals don't need a fifth starter until April 12th and they are planning on taking it slow with him for now.

He has continued to progress but I will keep tabs on it.
