Punters and kickers, by nature, are not the cool kids.  In the NFL world, punters and kickers are the equivalent of the tuba player in the high school band.  The homecoming queen isn't dying to go to the dance with the tuba playing punter.  The NFL cool kids are the quarterbacks, receivers and corners.  But there's always an exception.

The exception is Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt.

I've had the chance to talk with Colquitt on a number of different occasions.  We were together during a Richard Petty Driving Experience at Kansas Speedway.  He was real.  He was hilarious and I won a 4-pack of Tank 7 from him because my lap times were faster than his.  (He still hasn't paid up by the way).  Colquitt crushed it at the 610 Sports Radio Fantasy Football Training camp last year.  He had the crowd eating out of his hand with the stories he was telling.  Once again he was authentic, he was informative and as always, hilarious.

Dustin Colquitt just gets it.

Which is why I wasn't surprised when I found out he would only give autographs at training camp on one condition.  If the fan seeking his autograph would return the favor.  Colquitt has fans sign his bucket hat.  Who does that?

Dustin Colquitt.

As I said, he gets it.  He understands that the fans are the ones that pay his salary.  He's appreciative and engaging to his customers.  In a time where many athletes are entitled, Colquitt is thankful.

He's 36-years old and, I thought, was the perfect candidate to be a salary cap casualty.  Last year and this year.  But Chiefs GM Brett Veach told him,"We're going young across the board, except for you."

Dustin Colquitt is the exception.  He's 36-years old.  he makes a smidge under $2.5-million and he's a punter.  But his value goes well beyond being one of the best punters in the NFL.  He not only understands is role, but he embraces it.

Second thought, Dustin Colquitt is more than the exception - he's exceptional.
